Position overview

Our client is seeking an associate with 2–3 years of relevant experience to join its energy practice in Portland. The work spans regulatory, project development, and transactional matters involving major energy infrastructure and rapidly growing data-center demand.

The Work

  • Advise clients on Western state energy regulatory and policy matters, with occasional work involving other state and federal frameworks.
  • Support developers, independent power producers, energy market participants, and utilities in regulatory proceedings and compliance matters.
  • Work on electric transmission and grid infrastructure issues, utility ratemaking, and change-of-control proceedings.
  • Assist with interconnection and large-load matters, including complex energy needs arising from data-center development.
  • Support regulatory matters involving natural gas infrastructure and related regulatory frameworks.
  • Analyze climate and environmental attributes of power supply and contribute to energy-transition work.
  • Conduct legal research, draft regulatory filings and client memoranda, and assist with agency interactions.
  • Support regulatory and diligence work for energy infrastructure transactions and collaborate across practices on project development and regulatory strategy.

What You Bring

  • Two to three years of relevant experience in energy regulatory, project development, or energy infrastructure matters.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice in California or another relevant U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Experience with electric and/or natural gas regulatory or infrastructure matters.
  • Familiarity with interconnection, grid infrastructure, or energy project development.
  • Large law firm, government agency, or energy industry experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with hydropower licensing or other energy infrastructure permitting is beneficial but not required.
  • Interest in the intersection of regulation, climate, infrastructure investment, and emerging energy demand, including data centers.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated annual salary range is $215,000–$290,000, adjusted based on job-related factors; eligible full-time employees may also be considered for an annual discretionary bonus and benefits.
