Position overview

Our client is seeking an experienced energy attorney to join its Projects, Energy, Environment & Resources practice in San Francisco. This counsel-level opportunity centers on complex power transactions, wholesale electricity markets, and regulatory matters supporting digital infrastructure and the energy transition.

The Work

  • Lead drafting and negotiation of bespoke power purchase agreements, energy service agreements, and complex interconnection arrangements for developers, utilities, and corporate buyers.
  • Advise on electric market design and participation within RTOs and ISOs, including capacity market mechanisms and large-load and generator interconnection policies in PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, and CAISO.
  • Represent clients in high-stakes proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and manage regulatory filings from inception through completion.
  • Counsel clients on compliance involving market-based rate programs, qualifying facilities, exempt wholesale generators, and interlocks.
  • Advise on federal energy policy, renewable energy integration, and carbon-free energy procurement strategies.
  • Work with partners on client relationship management and contribute to thought leadership involving digital infrastructure, energy infrastructure, and the energy transition.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to associates, supporting the quality of work product and their professional development.

What You Bring

  • At least six years of energy law experience; experience in the 6–12-year range is relevant to this search.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex energy transactions and regulatory filings with minimal partner supervision.
  • Substantial knowledge of the Federal Power Act, wholesale power markets, and power transaction structures.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating power purchase agreements, energy service agreements, or interconnection arrangements.
  • Knowledge of RTO/ISO market design, capacity mechanisms, market participation, or large-load and generator interconnection issues.
  • Experience representing clients in FERC proceedings or advising on related regulatory compliance.
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice in California or eligibility to waive into the jurisdiction.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated salary range is $245,000–$420,000, and the position is eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, 401(k), medical, dental and vision insurance, personal medical and parental leave, paid holidays, and family care benefits.
