Position overview

Our client is seeking a senior energy attorney to join its Projects, Energy, Environment & Resources practice in Phoenix. This counsel-level opportunity centers on high-stakes power and regulatory matters at the intersection of large-scale digital infrastructure and the energy transition, with substantial responsibility for leading matters and developing client relationships.

The Work

  • Lead the drafting and negotiation of bespoke power purchase agreements, energy service agreements, and related power arrangements for developers, utilities, and corporate buyers, including data center and technology-sector participants.
  • Manage complex generator and large-load interconnection matters, including negotiations and strategic issues arising from interconnection arrangements and policies.
  • Advise clients on electric market design and participation in regional transmission organizations and independent system operators, including PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, and CAISO.
  • Represent clients in significant proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and advise on compliance matters involving market-based rate programs, qualifying facilities, exempt wholesale generators, and interlocks.
  • Counsel clients on federal energy policy, renewable energy integration, and carbon-free energy procurement strategies.
  • Manage transactions and regulatory filings from inception through completion with minimal partner oversight, while maintaining direct client communication and helping advance client relationships.
  • Contribute to practice development and thought leadership concerning digital infrastructure, energy infrastructure, and the energy transition.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to associates, supporting strong work product and their professional development.

What You Bring

  • At least six years of experience practicing energy law; experience in the 6–12 year range is relevant to this senior opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex energy transactions and regulatory filings from inception to completion with limited supervision.
  • Substantial knowledge of the Federal Power Act, wholesale power markets, and power transaction structures.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating power purchase agreements, energy service agreements, or comparable power and interconnection arrangements.
  • Familiarity with electric market design, RTO/ISO processes, and issues involving capacity markets, large-load or generator interconnection, and market participation.
  • Experience representing clients before FERC or advising on related regulatory compliance matters.
  • Strong judgment, communication, and client-service capabilities, with the ability to work collaboratively and contribute to client relationship development.
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admission, or eligibility for admission by waiver, in Arizona.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated annual compensation range is $245,000–$420,000, depending on qualifications and experience, with eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus, 401(k), medical, dental and vision insurance, personal medical and parental leave, paid holidays, and family care benefits.
