Position overview

Our client is seeking an experienced energy attorney to join its Projects, Energy, Environment & Resources practice in Palo Alto. This counsel-level opportunity centers on large-scale digital infrastructure and the energy transition, with substantial responsibility for complex transactions, regulatory matters, client relationships, and associate mentorship.

The Work

  • Lead the drafting and negotiation of bespoke power purchase agreements, energy service agreements, and complex interconnection arrangements for developers, utilities, and corporate buyers.
  • Manage complex power transactions and regulatory filings from inception through completion, exercising substantial ownership with minimal partner supervision.
  • Advise on electric-market design and participation matters involving RTOs and ISOs, including PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, and CAISO.
  • Represent clients in significant proceedings before FERC and advise on market-based rate programs, qualifying facilities, exempt wholesale generators, and interlocks.
  • Counsel clients on wholesale power markets, renewable energy integration, emerging federal energy policy, and carbon-free energy procurement strategies.
  • Work with clients in the digital and energy infrastructure sectors, including data center developers and large technology-company power buyers.
  • Participate in client relationship management and contribute to thought leadership on digital infrastructure, energy infrastructure, and the energy transition.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to associates, supporting the quality of work product and their professional development.

What You Bring

  • At least 6 years of experience practicing energy law; the role is scoped for attorneys with approximately 6–12 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex energy transactions and regulatory filings from inception to completion with limited partner supervision.
  • Deep knowledge of the Federal Power Act, wholesale power markets, and power transaction structures.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating power purchase agreements, energy service agreements, and interconnection arrangements.
  • Knowledge of RTO/ISO market design, including capacity markets, large-load and generator interconnection policies, or market participation.
  • Experience with FERC proceedings or regulatory compliance involving market-based rates, qualifying facilities, exempt wholesale generators, or interlocks.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to take ownership of sophisticated matters while working collaboratively with clients and colleagues.
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admission, or eligibility for admission by waiver, in California.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated salary range is $245,000–$420,000, depending on qualifications and experience, and the role is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, 401(k), medical, dental and vision insurance, personal medical and parental leave, paid holidays, and family care benefits.
