Position overview

Our client is seeking a midlevel associate with 3–6 years of energy-law experience to join its Projects, Energy, Environment & Resources practice in San Diego. The work spans power transactions, electric-market design, and federal energy regulation, with a focus on digital infrastructure and the energy transition.

The Work

  • Negotiate power purchase agreements and customized energy service agreements for developers, utilities, and corporate buyers, including technology companies and data center developers.
  • Advise clients on electric-market design and participation in regional transmission organization and independent system operator markets, including PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, and CAISO.
  • Analyze capacity-market mechanisms, large-load and generator interconnection policies, and related market developments.
  • Represent clients in proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and advise on regulatory compliance involving market-based rate programs, qualifying facilities, exempt wholesale generators, and interlocks.
  • Counsel clients on federal energy policy, renewable energy integration, and carbon-free energy procurement strategies.
  • Draft bespoke energy contracts and provide practical advice on power-market structures and regulatory requirements.

What You Bring

  • 3–6 years of experience practicing energy law; a mix of regulatory and transactional experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Federal Power Act, power-market mechanics, and power transaction structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate bespoke energy contracts.
  • Experience advising on energy regulatory matters, power markets, or energy transactions relevant to the responsibilities described.
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice in California or eligibility to waive into the jurisdiction.

Compensation & Benefits

The position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and offers 401(k), medical, dental, and vision coverage, personal medical and parental leave, paid holidays, and family care benefits.

The stated annual compensation range is $190,000–$390,000, dependent on qualifications and experience.
