Our client is seeking a midlevel associate to join its Projects, Energy, Environment & Resources practice in Madison. The role offers work at the intersection of digital infrastructure and the energy transition, advising on power strategies, electric markets, and state and federal regulatory frameworks.
The Work
- Negotiate power purchase agreements and custom energy service agreements for developers, utilities, and corporate buyers, including technology companies and data center developers.
- Advise clients on electric market design and participation in RTOs and ISOs, including capacity market mechanisms and large-load and generator interconnection policies.
- Work on market issues involving PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, and CAISO, helping clients address the rules and structures affecting energy procurement and infrastructure development.
- Represent clients in proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and advise on compliance matters involving market-based rate programs, qualifying facilities, exempt wholesale generators, and interlocks.
- Counsel clients on emerging federal energy policy, renewable energy integration, and carbon-free energy procurement strategies.
- Draft and negotiate bespoke energy contracts and advise on power transaction structures tailored to client and project needs.
What You Bring
- Three to six years of experience practicing energy law; a mix of regulatory and transactional experience is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Federal Power Act, electric power market mechanics, and power transaction structures.
- Demonstrated ability to draft bespoke energy contracts.
- Experience or interest in FERC regulatory matters and electric market issues.
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice, or eligibility to waive into practice, in Wisconsin.
