Position overview

Our client is seeking a midlevel associate with 3–6 years of energy law experience to join its Projects, Energy, Environment & Resources practice in Chicago. This opportunity spans sophisticated power transactions, electric market design, federal regulation, and the energy needs of digital infrastructure and the energy transition.

The Work

  • Negotiate power purchase agreements and customized energy service agreements for developers, utilities, and corporate buyers, including technology companies and data center developers.
  • Advise clients on power strategies and procurement structures for large energy needs, including carbon-free energy procurement and renewable energy integration.
  • Counsel clients on electric market design and participation in RTOs and ISOs, including capacity market mechanisms and large-load and generator interconnection policies.
  • Work on market issues across PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, and CAISO, applying market knowledge to clients’ project and commercial objectives.
  • Represent clients in proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and advise on federal energy regulatory requirements.
  • Advise on market-based rate programs, qualifying facilities, exempt wholesale generators, interlocks, and related compliance matters.
  • Contribute to advice on emerging federal energy policy and regulatory frameworks affecting energy infrastructure and power markets.

What You Bring

  • Three to six years of experience practicing energy law; a combination of regulatory and transactional experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Federal Power Act, electric power market mechanics, and power transaction structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate bespoke energy contracts, including power purchase agreements or energy service agreements.
  • Experience advising on electric market design, RTO/ISO matters, FERC regulation, or related energy transactions.
  • Strong legal analysis and communication skills, with the ability to provide practical advice to clients on complex regulatory and commercial issues.
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice in Illinois or eligible to waive into the jurisdiction.
