Position overview

Our client is seeking a Patent Associate with 1–2 years of law-firm patent prosecution experience to join its Palo Alto team. The opportunity is suited to an attorney with patent bar membership and a technical background in engineering, physics, or a related discipline.

The Work

  • Contribute to patent prosecution matters, applying prior law-firm prosecution experience to patent application analysis and written prosecution work.
  • Bring technical knowledge to matters involving fields such as electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering, physics, and materials sciences.
  • Work with technologies that may include artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, solid state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, and optics.
  • Apply relevant technical training to help address the subject matter presented in patent prosecution matters.
  • Develop within a practice that considers candidates with a range of relevant technical degrees, from bachelor's-level education through advanced degrees.

What You Bring

  • One to two years of patent prosecution experience at a law firm.
  • Membership in the patent bar.
  • A background in physics, applied physics, engineering physics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior academic credentials.
  • Working knowledge or practical experience in AI or machine learning applications, solid state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, or optics is strongly preferred.
  • An advanced degree or prior patent agent experience is preferred; candidates with a bachelor's degree and relevant experience will also be considered.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated salary range is $225,000–$310,000, based on year classification, and discretionary merit bonuses may also be awarded.
