Position overview

Our client is seeking a Patent Associate with 1–2 years of law firm patent prosecution experience to join its Wilmington, Delaware practice. Candidates should be registered to practice before the patent bar and have a background in engineering, physics, materials science, or a related technical discipline.

The Work

  • Develop and prosecute patent applications, applying a strong technical foundation to patent matters.
  • Analyze inventions and technical subject matter in areas aligned with your academic or professional background.
  • Work on patent prosecution matters drawing on prior law firm experience and build responsibility for assigned work.
  • Bring relevant knowledge or practical experience in areas such as AI and machine learning applications, solid state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, or optics.
  • Apply technical training from fields including electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering; physics; physical chemistry; and materials science.

What You Bring

  • One to two years of patent prosecution experience in a law firm setting.
  • Membership in the patent bar.
  • A degree or relevant technical background in physics, applied physics, engineering physics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Superior academic credentials.
  • Working knowledge or practical experience in AI or machine learning applications, solid state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, or optics is strongly preferred.
  • An advanced degree and prior patent agent experience are preferred; candidates with a B.S. or B.A. and relevant experience will also be considered.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated salary range is $225,000–$310,000, based on year classification, and discretionary merit bonuses may also be awarded.
