Position overview

Our client is seeking a Patent Associate with 1–2 years of law-firm patent prosecution experience to join its Washington, DC practice. The opportunity is designed for an attorney with patent bar membership and a technical background in engineering, physics, or a related physical science discipline.

The Work

  • Contribute to patent prosecution matters, applying a strong understanding of the underlying technology to patent applications and prosecution work.
  • Use technical training in areas such as electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering; physics; physical chemistry; or materials science to engage with complex inventions.
  • Work on matters connected to technologies that may include AI and machine learning applications, solid-state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, and optics.
  • Develop experience and responsibility in patent prosecution assignments, with the specific mix of drafting, patent office responses, matter ownership, and client interaction to be discussed with the team.

What You Bring

  • One to two years of patent prosecution experience at a law firm.
  • Membership in the patent bar.
  • A technical background in physics, applied physics, engineering physics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Working knowledge or practical experience in AI/ML and its applications, solid-state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, or optics is strongly preferred.
  • An advanced degree and prior patent agent experience are preferred; candidates with a relevant bachelor’s degree will also be considered.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated salary range is $225,000–$310,000, based on year classification, and discretionary merit bonuses may also be awarded.
