Position overview

Our client is seeking a Patent Associate with 1–2 years of law firm patent prosecution experience to join its Austin practice. This opportunity is intended for an attorney with patent bar membership and technical training in engineering, physics, physical chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline.

The Work

  • Contribute to patent prosecution matters, applying prior law firm prosecution experience and technical knowledge to work involving inventions in engineering and physical sciences.
  • Use a background in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, physics, physical chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline to engage with the technical subject matter of patent matters.
  • Bring working knowledge or practical experience in AI and machine learning applications, solid state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, or optics to relevant prosecution work.
  • Develop and apply strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills in carrying out patent prosecution responsibilities.

What You Bring

  • One to two years of law firm patent prosecution experience.
  • Membership in the patent bar.
  • A degree or technical background in physics, applied physics, engineering physics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior academic credentials.
  • Working knowledge or practical experience in AI or machine learning applications, solid state physics, quantum computing, nuclear physics, semiconductors, or optics is strongly preferred.
  • An advanced degree and prior patent agent experience are preferred; candidates with a relevant bachelor’s degree will also be considered.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated salary range is $225,000–$310,000, based on year classification, with discretionary merit bonuses also possible.
