Position overview

Our client is seeking an associate with 3–6 years of relevant experience to advise on complex federal energy regulation as utilities, developers, and data center operators address evolving infrastructure and interconnection needs. The work is approximately 80% FERC regulatory matters, with the balance supporting data center-related and energy transactional work. Washington, D.C. is preferred; Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco are also possible locations.

The Work

  • Advise electric and natural gas utilities, generation and infrastructure developers, and market participants on matters arising under the Federal Power Act and Natural Gas Act.
  • Represent clients in FERC regulatory proceedings, including preparing filings, conducting legal research, and managing interactions with the agency.
  • Work on electric transmission rates and incentives, including regulatory issues that affect the development and operation of energy infrastructure.
  • Address interconnection and large-load matters, including complex power needs associated with data centers.
  • Support wholesale energy market matters and natural gas pipeline certification, rate, and compliance work.
  • Assist with the regulatory aspects of energy infrastructure transactions and collaborate across practices on infrastructure, regulatory, and energy-transition matters.

What You Bring

  • Three to six years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful experience with FERC regulatory matters.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice in the relevant U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Experience with electric and/or natural gas regulatory work.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to prepare clear and effective regulatory filings.
  • Experience in a large law firm or government agency, such as FERC or a state commission.
  • Familiarity with interconnection or energy infrastructure development is valued; hydropower licensing experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Interest in work at the intersection of regulation, infrastructure investment, and emerging energy demands, including data centers.

Why Consider It

Join a high-demand, sophisticated FERC practice with national reach and a substantial mix of regulatory work for utilities, developers, and market participants.

The role offers direct client exposure, meaningful responsibility, and the opportunity to grow with expanding data center and energy infrastructure matters, supported by a collegial, team-oriented environment and strong mentorship.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated annual salary range is $215,000–$315,000, with actual pay adjusted based on job-related factors; eligible full-time employees may also be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
