Position overview

Our client is seeking an associate to join its Washington, DC environmental litigation practice. The role is designed for a lawyer with federal environmental litigation experience, a strong interest in the work, and the judgment to take ownership of complex matters and projects.

The Work

  • Work on federal environmental litigation matters, with civil litigation experience particularly relevant.
  • Analyze complex, technical regulatory schemes and develop a clear understanding of the legal and factual issues they present.
  • Contribute to enforcement-related matters involving federal environmental requirements, including matters involving federal agencies or the Department of Justice.
  • Manage and complete projects with meaningful independence and minimal direct supervision.
  • Engage directly with clients and communicate legal analysis and project developments.
  • Apply environmental and administrative law concepts to litigation and enforcement issues.

What You Bring

  • Approximately 3–7 years of relevant experience; candidates outside this range who have a strong interest in the practice are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with federal environmental litigation; civil matters are preferred.
  • Government-side enforcement experience involving environmental or similar issues is an advantage.
  • Understanding of federal agency and/or Department of Justice approaches to enforcing federal environmental requirements.
  • A solid foundation in environmental law and administrative law concepts.
  • Ability to analyze complex and technical regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills, supported by strong academic credentials.
  • Ability to work independently, manage projects, and complete assignments with limited direct supervision.

Compensation & Benefits

The role offers a substantial compensation range of $260,000–$420,000 for the indicated class-year range, with the salary offered dependent on qualifications and operational considerations.
