Position overview

Our client is seeking a junior- to mid-level associate to join its Sovereign Finance team in New York City. The role is focused on complex international capital markets and financing work and requires fluency in both Portuguese and Spanish, along with experience in capital markets, finance, sovereign debt, project finance, or related cross-border transactions.

The Work

  • Represent sovereign governments, sub-sovereigns, state-owned enterprises, and other market participants in sovereign bond offerings and related capital markets transactions.
  • Work on liability management transactions, including the drafting and analysis required to support complex sovereign debt matters.
  • Advise on derivatives transactions, financings, and refinancings involving sovereign and other cross-border finance participants.
  • Contribute to sovereign debt restructurings, collaborating with clients and counterparties on sophisticated international matters.
  • Support transactions involving innovative sovereign finance structures, including sukuk bonds, diaspora bonds, and USAID-guaranteed issuances.
  • Work on transaction terms and market developments such as aggregated collective action clauses and equal ranking clauses.
  • Engage directly with clients and counterparties while taking meaningful responsibility as part of a collaborative team.

What You Bring

  • Three to six years of relevant legal experience, with experience in capital markets, finance, sovereign debt, project finance, or related cross-border transactional matters.
  • Fluency in both Portuguese and Spanish.
  • Strong drafting and analytical skills applicable to sophisticated transactional work.
  • Outstanding academic credentials.
  • Interest in complex international transactions and the ability to collaborate directly with clients and counterparties.
  • Currently eligible to become licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction of application.

Compensation & Benefits

The stated salary range is $225,000–$310,000, commensurate with experience, and the position is eligible for an hours-based bonus.
